What is included if you Study Mandarin at a University in China?
Each university arranges a placement test for students at the beginning of each term. Students are assigned to a class level that meets their individual level. Classes run the full spectrum through elementary, intermediate, and advanced. The curriculum of the university courses is broad enough to meet any students needs.
Students study: speaking, listening comprehension, reading, writing, pronunciation, newspaper reading, grammar, classical Chinese language, Chinese history, and modern Chinese topics. There are 20 class hours per week, Monday through Friday. The intensive course study option adds 10 class hours per week of learning Mandarin.
Many universities also offer elective courses for students to acquire a better understanding of studying Chinese culture. Examples of elective courses are: Chinese character study, Mandarin pronunciation, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, Chinese songs, HSK lessons (the official Chinese language test), Tai Ji, Chinese Martial arts, Chinese Er-hu, and more.
Students that regularly attend class and pass examinations have their achievements recognized with the award of final grades and a program certificate from the university the attended. Depending on a student's class level and the length of program selected, the coursework and credits may be recognized by many major American universities such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Northwestern University, and many others.
